Feeling sick in another country

In different countries, first signs of sickness call for different methods and measures. In Japan, traditional practices are done by elders to heal sicknesses. The health of the Japanese community is somewhat accustomed to these practices and organic materials. The elderly in Japan prepares different kinds of remedies that can heal and accompany simple headaches, colds and sometimes, fever. The belief of the Japanese towards the natural and the organic depicts it in how they treat and manage their well being. The most popular remedy around the globe is hot soup, plenty of water and lots of rest or sleep. In Japan, most common remedy comes from vegetables around the corner of the home’s garden or is available upon request in super markets. First is to drink any kind of tea, since the heat of it will make the person sweat. It detoxifies and also makes the temperature of the body normal. Next is to add some plants inside the tea. Umeboshi or Plums are also available almost everywhere and it is simply added to the tea when the person has sore throat. A favorite ingredient of the elders who believe in natural curing is onion. It may smell a little funky, but it sure does magic. A spring onion is grilled and ate by patients who feel uneasiness because of stuffy nose and headaches. Onion water is also present in almost all traditional houses of families. Crushed onion combined with water is said to have curing properties since onion is known for its anti-bacterial properties and anti-inflammation properties. No wonder it really does help a person who feels uncomfortable. In addition, even if an onion makes you cry, they say that sniffing it can also cure colds.

Another favorite is the Gingko nuts. The elders say that eating 5 to 6 pieces would heal coughs since it induces phlegm to come out of the lungs. Radish is also a favorite ingredient in Japan, especially in its cuisine. Did you know that eating or drinking radish can heal coughs too?

So whether you are Japanese or not, if ever you find yourself sick in Japan, and since drugstores do not pop up in every alley, it is better to believe the Japanese elders and take some natural and herbal for you to feel better. Drinking onion water may not be as bad as you think, since having colds while on vacation is probably worse.
